Disney Plus' new Loki series promises to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a time-bending espionage plot and a new cast of characters. To bring the story to life, the show's team drew from the films of director David Fincher for the plot of the film, as reported by Deadline.

"Se7en is a very heavy influence,” series director and executive producer Kate Herron said. "Fincher for sure. I think Zodiac… was a big influence in the writer's room," head writer Michael Waldon added.

The two revealed their influence during a virtual press conference ahead of the six-part series' premiere on Disney Plus this Wednesday, June 9. The Loki series will feature Hiddleston's God of Mischief stripped of his status as Asgard royalty and entering the fold of an investigatory agency specializing in time criminals.

While Loki was killed off by Thanos at the start of Avengers: Infinity War, another version of the character escaped from the Avengers' clutches during a time travel sequence in Avengers: Endgame, creating a new timeline. The Loki featured in this new series has not experienced the events of Thor: The Dark World or Thor: Ragnarok.

"We did not know [about doing a Loki show] when we shot Infinity War, but we did know it when we shot Endgame,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige explained.

"I just love playing the character, I always have,” Hiddleston said about reprising the role. “I think he is a character of huge range so it never feels like the same.”

Loki continues a busy first year for Marvel's slate of original programming on Disney Plus. It will be the third MCU series on the streamer following the runs of WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Additionally, the MCU is launching four new cinematic entries this year. The long-delayed Black Widow will premiere in theaters and on Disney Plus at a $30 price point on July 9. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home will all have exclusive theatrical runs later this year.

Loki isn't the only upcoming comic book adaptation to draw inspiration from David Fincher. Warner Bros.' upcoming reboot The Batman also looks to be taking inspiration from Zodiac for Paul Dano's Riddler.
