Good news from the Grid, Tron fans. The third movie is beginning to gain momentum at Disney, with Deadline reporting the studio has tapped Lion director Garth Davis to helm Tron 3, with Jared Leto expected to star.

Deadline notes, “Tron would mark Davis’ first tentpole, and though he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs.”

Deadline is quick to clarify that while Tron 3 is currently in development at Disney, it hasn’t yet been given an official greenlight by the studio, so there’s no guarantee the new movie will actually see the light of day. Still, ten years after the release of Tron: Legacy, a followup is looking more and more likely.

Word of a Leto-driven Tron movie first surfaced in 2017, with The Hollywood Reporter indicating the film would be a franchise reboot rather than a direct sequel to Legacy. Leto is reportedly playing a new character named Ares, one who is said to have been a key part of the abandoned Tron 3 script. That could imply the reboot is still part of the same universe as the previous two films, but it’s unclear if characters like Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn or Olivia Wilde’s Quorra will return.

Unfortunately, Tron himself likely won’t be appearing, as Bruce Boxleitner confirmed he’s “done” with the franchise. That said, Boxleitner did reunite with his original Tron costume earlier in 2020 for Disney+ series Prop Culture.

Tron: Legacy co-producer Justin Springer is on board to produce the new movie. In the event the film moves forward, Leto and his producing partner Emma Ludbrook would also help produce in some capacity.
