James Wan is set to produce a Universal Pictures monster movie with Supernatural writer Robbie Thompson.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, citing that Wan will produce the movie using a script written by Thompson, who’s not just a writer for CW’s Supernatural, but also a long time executive producer on the show. The movie is currently untitled, but it will be a horror thriller. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources say that the movie will be a modern monster movie with a story that takes cues from Universal’s classic monster film legacy.

“With shades of Disturbia, the story will focus on a group of teens who discover that a neighbor is building a monster in his basement,” The Hollywood Reporter said in their story. “Spoiler: the monster gets loose.”

A movie about someone building a monster sounds very reminiscent of Universal’s classic Frankenstein, but until more information about the movie is known, the true nature of this film is anybody’s guess.

Wan is producing the movie under the roof of his Atomic Monster production company, but he will not direct the monster horror thriller. The director of the film is not currently known.

This news comes at a time where Universal’s classic monsters are already in the spotlight, with The Invisible Man currently in theaters. We thought it was a great movie, giving The Invisible Man an 8 out of 10. This new project from Wan and Thompson will likely end up as a standalone monster movie, with Universal’s Dark Universe being reconfigured for the time being following 2017’s Tom Cruise-led The Mummy, which was a commercial disappointment.

Wan is currently busy at work on his upcoming R-rated Mortal Kombat movie reboot that will be released in theaters next year. While not much is known about the movie, we do know some of the actors cast in the Mortal Kombat movie reboot. This movie wrapped filming in December last year and is expected to be released on January 1, 2021.
