Altered Carbon Season 2 Cast, Characters, Fights, and Exclusives

Altered Carbon’s first season debuted on February 2, 2018, starring Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs. In our review of that season, we described the show as “a transporting sci-fi thriller that rivals Blade Runner in the depth of its universe.” But we also noted that the “murder mystery narrative … loses steam early on,” even while “the supporting characters and socio-political issues prove engaging from beginning to end.”

That July, Netflix announced that Altered Carbon Season 2 was in the works with a new lead, with Anthony Mackie taking over for Kinnaman in the role of Takeshi Kovacs. Additionally, Alison Schapker (Lost, Fringe) would now serve as co-showrunner alongside Season 1 boss Laeta Kalogridis, with both executive producing as well. Simone Missick (Luke Cage), Dina Shihabi (Jack Ryan), and German actor Torben Liebrecht) also joined the cast as new characters.

Based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel, Altered Carbon is set in a futuristic world where human consciousness can be put into different bodies, or “sleeves.” The plot centers on Takeshi Kovacs, whose journey spans hundreds of years, and across different planets and bodies.

In our review of Season 2, we said that “Altered Carbon’s second season learns some valuable time management lessons from its first outing, by focusing less on the cyberpunk Sherlock Holmes-esque aspects of its narrative, and more on expanding its imaginative universe for the better. Anthony Mackie has a very different interpretation of Takeshi Kovacs than Season 1’s Joel Kinnaman, however, that doesn’t make it any less of an impactful performance. Anchored by a strong supporting cast including Chris Connor’s Poe and Torben Liebrecht’s Ivan Carrera, Altered Carbon Season 2 is a worthy followup that, at times, surpasses the first season with a more expansive universe that stretches far beyond the confines of Bay City.” Ready to jump in?
