Actor Diego Luna says that the untitled Star Wars: Rogue One prequel series will begin filming this year. Luna will be reprising his role as Cassian Andor for the Disney+ series alongside Alan Tudyk’s deadpan droid K2-SO.
“Yes, we are doing it. We are doing it this year,” Luna told ET about the Rogue One spin-off. “It’s happening, and I’m getting ready for it.”
The Rogue One show was originally scheduled to shoot in 2019 but production was delayed. IGN has reached out to Disney for confirmation but they declined to comment.
The Rogue One series will follow the adventures of Cassian and K2-SO during the time when the Rebel Alliance was forming to combat the Empire. While Luna said he knew very little about the series at this point, he said he has read some scripts, and he elaborated on how the show would capitalize on telling a story where the audience already knows the ending but are unaware of how the story gets there, just like how the movie did, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
“It is a different approach because of the beauty and it’s how things happen. It’s not just what happens. It’s not the typical way of approaching a story. It’s about how things happen, which in fact, is the same that happened in Rogue One,” he said. “You know the ending, but you don’t know how it happened, and we have that challenge in front of us again, which is exciting.”

Production troubles are not uncommon with Star Wars projects. Recently, shooting for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was delayed until 2021 so its scripts could be given an overhaul, although the series is still on target for its original release. In October 2019, the Rogue One series saw a shakeup behind the scenes when Tony Gilroy was brought on to write the pilot and direct multiple episodes, not unlike how he was brought on the Rogue One movie to rewrite and reshoot some scenes.
