The Mortal Kombat faithful will remember how, back in 2017, preliminary work began on a re-release of the fighter’s original trilogy of terror. Mortal Kombat Kollection Online was to be a remaster of the first three MK titles, complete with fully re-drawn visuals, new mechanics, and online multiplayer. For fans, it sounded too good to be true, and would turn out so, as development was canned in 2018.
And so it is understandably eyebrow-raising to see that Mortal Kombat Kollection Online has just received a listing on the Pan European Game Information board (PEGI), which rates the abandoned project with an “18” certificate for the PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch platforms. NetherRealm Studios has made no mention of this project since its cancellation – in fact MKKO is barely referenced outside of the MK fanbase, but the appearance of the PEGI rating has got fans’ tongues wagging.
Now, of course, this is no confirmation of anything, but it is curious to see the project pop up again. Personally, I would love a newly-remastered MK trilogy. As I’ve bored you all with before, these three titles defined my formative years and, outside of the Xbox 360 release of UMK3 and the disastrous Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection, I’ve missed fighting my fellow mortals on these ’90s classics. Here’s hoping we hear some positive news soon. Until then, take this with a large pinch of salt, something Mortal Kombat players have in abundance.
