Yesterday Microsoft announced a new Xbox One S: the Xbox One S All Digital Edition, with a price of $249.99. The new machine looks like a regular Xbox One S, but if you try to put a disc in there, you’re out of luck. It only plays games from its storage drive. The disc drive is gone entirely.
The philosophy behind the new, disc-less Xbox One S is to give people a good deal. But is it a good deal? Microsoft told us yesterday its $249.99 suggested retail price “is $50 USD less than Xbox One S,” and it expects retailers will set prices accordingly once the Xbox One S All-Digital comes out May 7. So we’ll see. As it stands right now, there are already several ways to get an Xbox One S for $250 or less, and you get the added benefit of a disc drive capable of playing 4K UHD Blu-rays.
