Dan Slott wrapped up a ten-year, hugely influential run on Amazing Spider-Man a few weeks ago. Consider Amazing Spider-Man #801 as one final, parting gift from the writer. The goal is less tying up any remaining loose ends than giving readers one more love letter to Marvel’s most enduring hero.

Despite this being the last stop after several hundred issues, Slott and artist Marcos Martin seem intent on making sure that Amazing Spider-Man #801 could function as someone’s first Spider-Man comic. It tells a completely standalone story, and it even opens with a one-page recap of Spidey’s origin story. That would almost seem redundant given how many times and how many different angles Slott has revisited that fateful day in his work. However, it quickly becomes clear that this origin rehash is directly relevant to the story at hand. Slott and Martin’s farewell issue is all about that important lesson Peter learned at the beginning and how small actions (or inactions) can wind up having profound consequences.
